Anyone who is at least 40 years old knows puppeteer Shari Lewis’ Lamb Chop show; This is the song that doesn’t end, it goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was and they will continue singing it forever because this is the song that doesn’t end, it goes on and on my friend… Sorry to have done that to you. 😂
Is the show why dogs love the lamb chop toy, though? No, but we have identified some of the reasons this particular famous lamb plush toy has become a favorite toy.
Shari Lewis’ Lamb Chop Play-a-Long
Lamb Chop was a puppet used by Shari Lewis in a children’s show called Captain Kangaroo in 1956. The popularity of the character led to her own children’s show – Lamb Chop Play-a-Long. This show aired until 1995. Re-runs appeared until 2009 and then there was no sign of lovable Lamb Chop until the lamb chop dog toy made its debut.
Dog Owners Loved Lamb Chop and Now Dogs Love the Lamb Chop Toy
Lamb Chop fans bought the Lamb Chop toy when it first came out because it reminded them of something positive about their childhood. What was interesting is that when dogs started to play with it, those dog owners started realizing their dogs adored their new toy.
They played with the interactive dog toy for hours – even preferring this dog toy over bones – even raw bones! Pet owners are thrilled with the added play fun, and Lamb Chop fans love how their fur babies enjoy the lamb as much as they did in their childhood.
There are thousands of plush toys available today, but why does this dog toy get so much attention? The following is why dogs love the Lamb Chop toy.
It’s Soft
Dogs love soft toys because they are easy to play with and that makes it more enjoyable than having to work on a toy to do whatever the pup wants. The plushy outside, soft inside, and of course the squeaker makes the perfect combination for a favorite toy.
The Squeaker Squeaks
The plastic squeaker is hidden deep inside of this lovable plush toy. The only way for a pup to get to it is to hug it tightly with its jaw. This makes it seem more alive and of course, no dog can deny that sound of a plaster squeaker.
Sparks Nurturing Instinct
The Lamb Chop dog toy resembles a real dog even though it’s a lamb. Dogs may think it’s a puppy due to its size. When dogs receive this new toy, they likely believe it’s a new puppy to take care of, which is why many cuddle it and carry it around with them.
Knit Sock-Like Texture
Some Lamb Chop dog toys are made with a knit sock-like texture, and all of us dog owners know how much our pooches love socks! What could be better than socks that can be played with? This is definitely a reason why dogs love the Lamb Chop toy.
It’s Calming
Cuddling with this interactive dog toy can great calm a restless dog. As the dog starts to grow an attachment to it, the calming response grows.
Dogs don’t want to be anxious – just like humans. Anything that helps them feel calm they will be drawn to, which is why they love this plush dog toy.

What great doggie toys and how I remember Lamb Chop from when my children were small! We have a Maltese pup and he loves cuddling with soft toys!

I remember that show! In syndication, of course, because I’m very young. LOL! 😉 But I can see why dogs would love the Lamb Chop toy for all the reasons you have said. So if I ever do get a dog, and I am hoping I will (planning on a Goldendoodle), I’ll keep that in mind.

HA! Barley is like that. Some dogs are just more motivated by treats than toys.

So cute, but if I buy one more toy for our dog, I will need a bigger basket. Bookmarking this for when her favorites get too old or yucky to play with.
